How can I enable and utilize both the path bar and address bar in Nautilus on Ubuntu?

anonymous user

I’ve been digging into Nautilus on Ubuntu lately, and I’m stuck on something that should be really simple but is driving me a bit nuts. I’ve got this feeling that I might be missing something obvious, but I can’t figure out how to enable and use both the path bar and the address bar at the same time. You know those situations where you just want to quickly jump to a folder but don’t want to lose track of where you are? That’s what I’m trying to achieve.

I’ve seen screenshots online where people have both the path bar and the address bar displayed, and it looks super handy for navigating through directories. I feel like having both could save me a ton of clicks and time, especially when I’m sifting through a bunch of nested folders. Or maybe I’m just being overly picky?

Here’s the thing: I’ve tried looking through the settings, but I can’t seem to find an option that lets me enable both. I’ve also done a bit of tinkering with the keyboard shortcuts, but nothing seems to pull it all together. I’m not even sure if it’s supposed to work that way or if I’m just wishing for something that’s not available.

I mean, at one point, I thought maybe Nautilus is designed for one or the other, but that doesn’t really feel right. I’ve read some forums and threads, but the information is a bit all over the place. Some people suggest using extensions, while others say it’s a built-in feature. It’s all a bit confusing, to be honest.

So, if anyone out there has nailed this down, I’d love to hear your tips or tricks on how to get both the path bar and the address bar working together in Nautilus. It would be cool to know if I’m missing any simple steps or if there’s a hidden gem in the settings that I haven’t spotted yet. Your insights would be super appreciated!

Nautilus Path Bar and Address Bar Help

Help with Nautilus: Path Bar & Address Bar

I totally get where you’re coming from! It can be a bit of a hassle when you just want a simple setup. From what I’ve seen, it might not be straightforward to have both the path bar and the address bar visible at the same time in Nautilus without some workarounds.

First off, by default, Nautilus generally allows you to switch between these two views, but not display them both simultaneously. Here are a couple of ideas you might want to try:

      1. Keyboard Shortcuts: You can quickly toggle between the path bar and the address bar using Ctrl+L (to focus on the address bar) and Alt+D (to focus on the path bar). While it’s not the same as having both at once, it does let you switch back and forth without too much hassle.
      2. Extensions / Settings: Some users have mentioned that there might be extensions or plugins that can help customize Nautilus further, but it seems hit or miss. You could look into the various extensions available for Nautilus through the GNOME extensions website!

Honestly, it might just be one of those things where Nautilus is set up for either/or to keep things simple. If you haven’t already, checking around in the main settings or preferences menu might turn up something useful. Just keep exploring! And if you do find a way to make both work together, that would be super cool to share with the community!

To use both the path bar and the address bar in Nautilus simultaneously, you need to ensure you are utilizing the latest version of Nautilus, as user interface features can evolve with updates. The combination of these two navigation elements may not be directly available out-of-the-box in earlier versions, so first, consider updating Nautilus through your software package manager. If your version allows both bars, you can enable the address bar by navigating to View in the menu and selecting ‘Show Toolbar’. The path bar generally remains visible, making it easy to track your current directory while having quick access to jump directly to other locations via the address bar.

If you’re still having issues or if your version does not support displaying both, you might want to consider using Nautilus extensions. Some recommended extensions can enhance functionality and possibly allow you to customize your navigation experience. Additionally, you can look into community forums where users might have shared their custom configurations or scripts to achieve this setup. Solutions can vary, as the desktop environment and Nautilus configurations can differ, but exploring these avenues could lead you to the functionality you’re seeking. If all else fails, consider providing feedback to the Nautilus development team, as user input is often crucial in improving user interfaces for future releases.
