After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04, I encountered an issue where VLC media player, which functioned properly in 20.10, is no longer working. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and what potential solutions are available?

anonymous user

So, I just upgraded my system to Ubuntu 21.04 from 20.10, and I’ve hit a snag that’s kinda bumming me out. I’ve been a huge fan of VLC media player for ages; it’s always been my go-to for all things media. But now, after the upgrade, it’s acting all weird and I can’t seem to get it to work at all. It’s like it forgot how to play media or something.

I’ve tried launching it, but it just gets stuck on the splash screen for ages before crashing. I even tried reinstalling it, thinking maybe that would shake things up a bit, but nope, still no luck. I’ve been digging through some forums and online guides, but I feel like I’m just going in circles without getting any real answers.

Has anyone else run into this issue after upgrading? I mean, it’s frustrating watching it just sit there while I have a ton of videos I want to watch. It seems like such a hassle, especially since I can’t find a solid alternative that fits my needs as well as VLC does. I’ve tried other players in the past, but they just don’t hit the same spot.

One thing I found online suggested that it might have something to do with missing codecs or graphic drivers. I tried installing a few extra packages – you know, the typical dependencies that VLC might need – but it didn’t make a difference. And while I’m not a complete noob when it comes to troubleshooting, I’m no expert either, so I’m sort of at a standstill here.

I’d really love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience and what you did to resolve it. Did you find any workarounds or alternative media players that actually work? Any tips or tricks would really help – I’m just looking to get back to enjoying my media!

      VLC Issues after Ubuntu Upgrade

Hey, I totally get what you’re going through!

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04, VLC can sometimes go a bit haywire. It’s super frustrating when your favorite player acts up, especially after making a big update!

Here are a few things you could try:

      • Reset VLC Preferences: Sometimes, VLC’s settings can get messed up during an upgrade. You can reset them by running the command:

        vlc --reset-config
      • Update Your Graphics Drivers: If you think it might be graphics-related, check if your drivers are up to date. You can usually do this through Software & Updates > Additional Drivers.
      • Install Missing Codecs: You mentioned trying some codecs, but you could also install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package if you haven’t already. Run:

        sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras
      • Try Running VLC from Terminal: Sometimes, running VLC from the terminal gives you error messages that can help figure out what’s going wrong. Just type vlc in the terminal and see what pops up.
      • Alternative Players: If VLC is still being a pain, you might want to try MPV or SMPlayer as alternatives. They’re pretty good too!

      Don’t Lose Hope!

You’re definitely not alone in this. Lots of folks have had similar issues after major upgrades. Just keep digging around online and you might find more solutions. Good luck getting back to your media marathon soon!

      VLC Issues After Ubuntu Upgrade

Experiencing issues with VLC after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04 is not uncommon, as there can be compatibility problems with the new version. The splash screen hang may be attributed to various factors such as missing dependencies, conflicts with existing codecs, or issues related to graphic drivers. First, make sure that your system is fully updated after the upgrade by running sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade in the terminal. Additionally, consider installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, which includes many codecs and fonts that can resolve playback issues. If these steps do not alleviate the problem, you might also want to explore clearing VLC’s configuration settings by removing the ~/.config/vlc directory, as corrupted settings can often cause the application to misbehave.

If these solutions still leave you hanging, it may be worth trying alternative media players that are known for their reliability in Linux environments, such as MPV or SMPlayer. MPV, in particular, is lightweight and highly customizable, making it a popular choice among power users. You can install it via sudo apt install mpv. If the issues with VLC stem from a complex interaction with your system’s hardware or dependencies, using a different player might provide a temporary escape while you continue troubleshooting. Lastly, seeking help on community forums with specific error outputs or logs can yield valuable insights, as other users may have encountered and resolved similar issues.
