How can I increase the Bluetooth connection timeout on Ubuntu 14.04 to prevent disconnection?

anonymous user

I’m having a bit of a tech headache with my Ubuntu 14.04 setup. A while back, I got this cool Bluetooth speaker, and at first, it worked like a charm. But lately, I’ve been experiencing this really annoying issue where it keeps disconnecting. Like, I can get through a couple of songs, and then poof, it’s gone. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the Bluetooth connection timing out too quickly, but I’m not entirely sure how to fix it.

I’ve searched around and found a few potential solutions, but nothing has seemed to work for me so far. You know how sometimes you find layers and layers of instructions online, and it all becomes a bit overwhelming? So, I figured I’d ask the community for help.

Does anyone know how to increase the Bluetooth connection timeout on Ubuntu 14.04? I’ve seen mentions of some command-line tinkering, but I’m not super comfortable with diving into terminal commands, and I don’t want to screw anything up, you know?

Also, I’d love to hear if there’s a way to do this without making it too complicated. The last thing I need is another rabbit hole of tech jargon that leaves me more confused than when I started! If you’ve dealt with a similar issue, maybe you could share some step-by-step guidance? I know there are different ways to tackle this, so any tips or personal experiences would be super helpful.

Oh, and if this is just a known issue with Bluetooth in Ubuntu 14.04 that I have to live with, any recommendations for fixing the disconnection problem in a different way would be appreciated too. Should I be considering upgrading my OS or maybe looking for an alternative approach?

Thanks so much in advance for any help—my playlists are counting on it!

Bluetooth Connection Timeout on Ubuntu 14.04

Help with Bluetooth Speaker Connectivity on Ubuntu 14.04

Sounds like you’re having a tough time with your Bluetooth speaker! I totally get how frustrating that can be. Here’s a simple way you can try to increase the Bluetooth timeout without getting too deep into the tech stuff.

Step-by-Step Guide to Increase Bluetooth Timeout

      1. Open the Terminal. You can do this by searching for “Terminal” in the Dash or pressing Ctrl + Alt + T.

      2. Type this command to edit the Bluetooth configuration file:

        sudo nano /etc/bluetooth/main.conf

It’ll ask for your password, so just type it in (you won’t see anything as you type).

      3. Look for a line that says IdleTimeout. If it’s commented out (starts with a #), you can change it. If it’s not there, you can add it yourself.

        IdleTimeout = 30

You can change the number from 30 to something like 60 or 120 for a longer timeout period.

      4. After you make those changes, save the file by pressing Ctrl + O, then hit Enter. Exit by pressing Ctrl + X.

      5. Finally, restart the Bluetooth service to apply changes. Type:

        sudo service bluetooth restart

      Other Tips

If this doesn’t solve your problem, here are a couple more ideas:

      • Check for Updates: Make sure your system is updated. Sometimes, updating packages can fix bugs.
      • Upgrade Your OS: If you’re really struggling, consider upgrading to a more recent version of Ubuntu. Ubuntu 14.04 is pretty old, and newer versions have better Bluetooth support.
      • Alternative Connections: If possible, try connecting your speaker through an auxiliary cable if Bluetooth isn’t working out.

Hopefully, this helps you keep your playlists flowing. Good luck, and may your music be uninterrupted!

Bluetooth Disconnection Issue on Ubuntu 14.04

To address the Bluetooth disconnection issue with your speaker on Ubuntu 14.04, you might want to start by checking the settings in the Bluetooth configuration files. To increase the connection timeout, you can try editing the bluetoothctl settings through the terminal. Open a terminal and run the command sudo nano /etc/bluetooth/main.conf. Look for the section labeled [General] and try adding or modifying the line IdleTimeout=30 (where 30 is the number of seconds you want for the timeout). Save the file and restart the Bluetooth service using the command sudo service bluetooth restart. This should help in extending the time before your speaker gets disconnected.

If you prefer to minimize terminal usage, consider using the GUI tool available for managing Bluetooth devices. You can install blueman via the Ubuntu Software Center or via terminal using sudo apt-get install blueman. Once installed, open it, select your Bluetooth speaker, and check the settings to see if there are any options related to connection timeouts or keeping the device active. Alternatively, if the issue persists despite these adjustments, it might be worth considering upgrading your operating system. Newer versions of Ubuntu have improved Bluetooth support and stability, which could provide a better experience with your speaker. Ultimately, if you’re still facing challenges, exploring alternative audio devices that have better compatibility with older OS versions could also be a solution.
