How can I troubleshoot the issue of Google Chrome not closing properly on my Ubuntu system?

anonymous user

I’ve been running into this really annoying issue with Google Chrome on my Ubuntu system, and I’m at my wit’s end trying to figure it out. So, here’s the deal: every time I attempt to close Chrome, it either freezes or just hangs around like that unwanted guest who overstays their welcome. I mean, I click on the “X” like it’s a hot potato, and sometimes nothing happens! And what’s worse, I have to dive into the terminal to kill the process manually, which is such a hassle.

I’ve tried a couple of things here and there, like restarting my computer, checking for updates, and even uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, but nothing seems to work. I’m not super tech-savvy, so I just end up feeling frustrated and defeated. I even looked at the settings to see if there were any weird extensions or apps hanging around that could be causing some interference, but I didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. Does anyone else have this problem?

I can’t tell if it’s a bug in the latest version or something with my configuration. Also, I don’t remember messing with any settings that might have prompted this bizarre behavior, so it’s a total mystery to me. I keep thinking it might be better if I switched to a different browser altogether, but I’ve grown so attached to Chrome—it just feels fast and reliable when it’s working properly.

Have any of you gone through this? If so, what did you do to get Chrome to behave? I’m all ears for any suggestions—what should I check, what commands should I run, or is there a secret trick I’m missing? If you’ve faced this and managed to solve it, I’d really appreciate your insights. I’d love to avoid this daily struggle if at all possible! Let’s help each other out here.

      Chrome Freezing Issue

Dealing with Chrome Freezing on Ubuntu

Yeah, that sounds super annoying! I get how frustrating it can be when Chrome just doesn’t want to shut down after you’ve clicked that “X” button. Here are a few things you might wanna check out:

      • Disable Hardware Acceleration: Sometimes, this feature can make Chrome act weirdly. Go to Settings → Advanced → System and try turning off “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
      • Clear Cache and Cookies: Your browser might be storing some data that’s causing issues. Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data and clean it up a bit.
      • Check for Conflicting Software: There might be some other applications messing with Chrome. You can check what’s going on by typing chrome://conflicts into the address bar.
      • Reinstall the Browser: Since you’ve already tried uninstalling it, maybe a different version would help? Sometimes, the stable version has bugs that the beta or canary versions don’t.
      • Use the Terminal to Check Processes: If it’s still giving you grief, you might want to look at the processes running. Open your terminal and type top or htop (if you’ve got it). Look for any Chrome processes that might not be terminating properly.

If all else fails, switching to a different browser might not be the worst idea. But hey, if you figure something out or find a fix, let everyone know! We’re all in this together, right?

It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating issue with Google Chrome on your Ubuntu system, which could stem from various underlying factors. First, I recommend checking if there are any conflicting Chrome extensions. While you mentioned not finding anything odd, it might help to run Chrome in incognito mode, where extensions are typically disabled, to see if the freezing persists. If incognito mode works fine, consider disabling extensions one by one or resetting Chrome settings to default. Additionally, it’s worth examining the system resources while you run Chrome. If you’re experiencing high CPU or memory usage, this could lead to the application hanging, so closing other resource-heavy applications could help improve performance.

If the issue still persists, you might want to consider running some diagnostic commands to check for potential misconfigurations or issues within your Ubuntu system. Launch the terminal and run top or htop to monitor the processes and see if Chrome is consuming abnormal amounts of resources. Also, updating your graphics drivers can sometimes resolve rendering issues that may cause Chrome to hang. Lastly, if manageable, you could try using a fresh user profile in Chrome or even reinstalling it completely, ensuring you remove any user data that might be lingering. If all else fails and you’re comfortable with it, consider trying Chromium as an alternative, as it tends to be more lightweight and can resolve some specific bugs present in the Chrome browser.
