Is it possible to configure automatic login on Ubuntu MATE 24.04?

anonymous user

I recently switched to Ubuntu MATE 24.04, and I’m loving the experience so far, but there’s this little feature I can’t seem to figure out, and I could really use some help! So, I’m wondering if anyone knows if it’s possible to set up automatic login on this version?

I’ve done a bit of digging myself. I found some info online about enabling automatic login in older versions of Ubuntu, but I’m unsure if those same steps apply here or if there are some new changes I need to be aware of. I’m not a total newbie when it comes to Linux, but I wouldn’t say I’m an expert either, so I’m kind of stuck in the middle.

I usually don’t mind entering my password every time I log in, but there are times, especially when I’m just using my laptop at home or for some casual browsing, when it would be super convenient not to have to do that. I mean, if my laptop is sitting on my desk and I can just walk over and start using it without the hassle, that would be ideal, right?

Now, the last thing I want to do is to mess something up, so if automatic login does require messing around with some settings or configurations, I’d really appreciate a step-by-step guide or something like that. I’ve heard that editing some files in the terminal can be risky, and the thought of breaking my installation is a bit terrifying!

Also, if there are any security concerns I should know about when enabling this feature, I’d love to hear about those, too. I’m not too worried about anyone gaining access to my laptop, but it’s always good to be informed, right?

So, if anyone has tried setting up automatic login on Ubuntu MATE 24.04 or has any tips, I’d be super grateful for your insights. Thanks!

Setting Up Automatic Login on Ubuntu MATE 24.04

If you want to set up automatic login on Ubuntu MATE 24.04, it’s actually pretty straightforward! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through it:

      1. Open the MATE Control Center: You can usually find this by clicking on the menu button at the bottom left, then going to Preferences > MATE Control Center.
      2. Go to Users and Groups: In the MATE Control Center, look for Users and Groups and click on it.
      3. Select Your User Account: You should see a list of users. Find your user account and select it.
      4. Unlock to Change Settings: There will be a button saying Unlock or a padlock icon. Click it and enter your password to make changes.
      5. Enable Automatic Login: Look for an option like Automatically login on this user or something similar, and check the box next to it.
      6. Save Changes: After checking the box, click OK or Apply to save your settings.

And that’s it! Now when you boot up your laptop, it should log you in automatically.

      Some Things to Consider

Keep in mind that enabling automatic login could potentially pose a security risk, especially if you are using your laptop in public spaces. Anyone could access your files if they have physical access to your device. So, if you’re okay with that risk at home, you’re good to go!

Make sure to double-check your settings and remember that if you ever need to disable it, just follow the same steps and uncheck the option.

If you run into anything confusing or feel unsure, don’t hesitate to ask for help. There are tons of friendly folks in the community who will be happy to guide you!

To enable automatic login on Ubuntu MATE 24.04, you will need to modify the LightDM configuration, which is the display manager used by this version. First, open your terminal (you can do this by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T). Then, run the command sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to open the configuration file in the nano text editor. Look for a section labeled [Seat:*]. If it doesn’t exist, you can add it. In this section, you will add the following lines:

      autologin-user=YOUR_USERNAME
      autologin-user-timeout=0

Replace YOUR_USERNAME with your actual username. After this, save your changes by pressing Ctrl + O, then Enter, and exit with Ctrl + X. This should enable automatic login on your next boot. Regarding security concerns, keep in mind that enabling automatic login means anyone with physical access to your laptop can access your files and sessions without a password. If security is a concern for you, consider setting up a lock screen for when the device is idling or is temporarily left unattended.
