What are some keyboard shortcuts I can use to transfer a window from one monitor to another in Ubuntu?

anonymous user

I’ve been getting super frustrated with my dual monitor setup on Ubuntu lately. I love having that extra screen real estate, but every time I want to move a window from one monitor to the other, it feels like such a hassle. It’s the small things that can really make a difference in my workflow, you know?

I mean, dragging windows back and forth with the mouse is fine and all, but sometimes it just doesn’t cut it. I’ve heard that there are keyboard shortcuts that can make transferring a window from one display to another a total breeze. The problem is, I’m not exactly a keyboard shortcut whiz, and every time I try to look it up, I get bombarded with a ton of information that’s either way too technical or doesn’t really apply to my setup.

So, I thought I’d reach out and see if anyone else has found a really handy way to switch windows around using just the keyboard. Do you guys have any specific shortcuts you use? Or maybe there’s a trick that not many people know about?

I’ve been playing around with the default window managers, and I noticed that there might be differences in shortcuts depending on whether you’re using GNOME, XFCE, or something else entirely. So, if you’re using a different desktop environment, sharing your method would be super helpful too!

I’m really hoping to streamline my workflow because suffice it to say, I’m spending way too much time just trying to position things on my screens. I would love to hear any tips or shortcuts that have worked wonders for you! Maybe there are even some settings I can tweak to make this process easier. Any help would be greatly appreciated – I’m all ears!

      Dual Monitor Shortcuts on Ubuntu

Keyboard Shortcuts for Moving Windows Between Monitors

It sounds like you’re really looking to streamline your workflow on a dual monitor setup! I totally get it; moving windows around can be such a hassle sometimes. Here are some keyboard shortcuts and tips that might help you out, depending on your desktop environment.

      If you’re using GNOME:

      • To move a window to the left monitor: Super (Windows key) + Shift + Left Arrow
      • To move a window to the right monitor: Super (Windows key) + Shift + Right Arrow
      • You can also use Alt + Space to open the window menu, and then “Move” and use the arrow keys to shift it around.

      If you’re using XFCE:

      • Try Alt + F7 to move a window and then use the arrow keys or the mouse to position it. Once it’s where you want it, just hit Enter!
      • Moving between monitors with the mouse can be done with Super + Shift + Left/Right Arrow as well.

      Some additional tips:

      • Check out your settings for keyboard shortcuts under “Settings” > “Keyboard” to customize shortcuts that work best for you!
      • Using virtual desktops can also help in organizing your open applications more efficiently.

Hopefully, these shortcuts can make your workflow smoother! Don’t hesitate to tweak your settings or try different combinations to see what feels best for you. Happy multitasking!

Improving Dual Monitor Workflow on Ubuntu

To enhance your dual monitor experience on Ubuntu, utilizing keyboard shortcuts can significantly streamline your workflow. For users in GNOME, you can use the Super + Shift + Left/Right Arrow keys to quickly move a window between monitors. This shortcut allows for seamless transitions without the need to rely solely on your mouse, ultimately saving you time and frustration. If you’re using XFCE, the shortcut is to hold Alt + F7 to activate the move window option, allowing you to then use the arrow keys to reposition your window without the cumbersome dragging process.

Additionally, consider checking your system settings for any customization options available for keyboard shortcuts. You can often find these in the keyboard settings under “Shortcuts” or a similar tab. This not only allows you to change existing shortcuts to something more comfortable for your workflow but also lets you create new ones tailored to your use case. Streamlining your workspace shouldn’t feel like a task, so playing around with these available options can help you achieve a setup that feels intuitive and efficient. Don’t hesitate to share your findings with the community as many users would benefit from collective knowledge and unique configurations!
