What are the reasons for configuring an internal traffic policy as local on a Service in Kubernetes?

I’ve been diving into Kubernetes lately and came across this topic about configuring internal traffic policies, specifically setting them as “local” on Services. It’s got me scratching my head. I mean, I’ve seen some setups where folks make these configurations for their services, but it’s not always clear why—especially when you’re juggling a bunch of other settings and priorities.

So here’s my dilemma: what are the actual reasons for doing this? I know that in theory, setting a traffic policy to local means that it only routes traffic to endpoints that are local to the node, instead of managing traffic for the entire cluster. But why would someone choose to constrain traffic in that way? Is it all about optimizing performance, reducing latency, or is there more to it?

I can imagine that in some scenarios, it might improve the overall responsiveness of applications. If we limit traffic only to local endpoints, we could potentially reduce the overhead of cross-node communication, right? But then again, are there other underlying benefits that I’m missing?

Another angle I’ve been pondering is how this might influence load balancing. If traffic is limited to local nodes, does that mean it could lead to uneven distribution of requests? Or is there a way that Kubernetes makes sure everything remains balanced effectively even with that restriction?

And let’s not forget about reliability and fault tolerance. Would making a Service’s traffic policy local create a single point of failure if that particular node goes down?
