What are the steps to modify the keyboard layout to Persian in Ubuntu 18.04?

anonymous user

I’m trying to set up my Ubuntu 18.04 to type in Persian, and I could really use some help. Honestly, I’m a bit lost when it comes to modifying the keyboard layout. I’ve been searching for answers online, but the instructions seem to be all over the place, and I want to make sure I’m doing it correctly without messing anything up.

So, I’m hoping someone here could walk me through the steps to change the keyboard layout to Persian. Like, where do I even start? I think I remember hearing something about going into the Settings, but I’m not entirely sure which section to look for. Is it in “Region & Language,” or am I barking up the wrong tree?

And then, once I find the right place, do I just add Persian as a new input method? How do I make it the default, or will it just show up when I click on the keyboard icon on the top right? Also, I’ve heard there might be different options for the Persian layout—like “Persian” versus “Persian (Phonetic)” or something like that. Is one better than the other, or does it just depend on what you’re used to?

I really want to make this as straightforward as possible. I’m just hoping that someone could break it down into simple steps, without assuming I know too much about all the techy stuff. If you have any tips on what to keep in mind or common pitfalls to avoid, that would be awesome too!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I really appreciate it!

Setting Up Persian Keyboard Layout in Ubuntu 18.04

No worries! Let’s break it down step by step to set up your Ubuntu 18.04 for typing in Persian.

Steps to Change Your Keyboard Layout:

      1. Open the Settings: You can find this by clicking on the top right corner of your screen where the system menu is (the one with the battery, network, or sound icons) and selecting Settings.
      2. Go to Region & Language: In the Settings window, look for “Region & Language” on the left sidebar. This is where you can change your keyboard layout.
      3. Add Input Source: In the “Input Sources” section, you’ll see a button labeled “+” or “Add”. Click on that to add a new input method.
      4. Find Persian: After clicking the “+” button, you’ll be taken to a list of languages. Scroll down or type “Persian” in the search bar to find it. You can choose either “Persian” or “Persian (Phonetic)”. The phonetic one is more like typing in English letters to get Persian letters, which some people find easier.
      5. Set Default Layout: Once you’ve added Persian, you can set it as your default. You might need to click and drag it to the top of the list, or just make sure it’s selected.
      6. Switching Between Layouts: To switch between keyboard layouts, you can click on the keyboard icon at the top right again. You’ll see the languages available, and you can choose Persian whenever you need it.

      Tips & Common Pitfalls:

      • Check you have your software updated; sometimes layout issues come from outdated systems.
      • Experiment with both Persian and Persian (Phonetic) to see which one you like better!
      • If you ever get lost, you can always return to “Region & Language” to make adjustments.
      • Make sure you know how to switch back to your original keyboard layout if needed!

Take it easy and enjoy typing in Persian. You’ve got this!

To set up your Ubuntu 18.04 for typing in Persian, start by navigating to the “Settings” application, which you can find in the sidebar or search for it in the application menu. Once in Settings, go to the “Region & Language” section. Here, you will see an option labeled “Input Sources.” Click on the “+” button to add a new keyboard layout. In the search bar that appears, type “Persian” to find the available layouts. You’ll likely see options such as “Persian” and “Persian (Phonetic).” Choose the one that best suits your typing preferences; for instance, the phonetic layout maps more closely to the English keyboard, which may be easier for those familiar with it. After adding your desired layout, you can reorder the layouts to set your preferred input method as the default.

Once you have added the Persian layout, it should now appear in your top-right corner keyboard icon. You can switch between your input methods by clicking this icon or using the default keyboard shortcut, which is usually Super + Space. Common pitfalls to avoid include forgetting to arrange your layouts correctly or misunderstanding the visual differences between layouts, which can lead to typing errors. Additionally, ensure your language settings are compatible with the Persian script to enhance your overall experience. By following these simple steps, you can easily switch to typing in Persian whenever you need.
