I’ve been diving into Docker lately, and I came across a question that’s been bugging me: do all Docker containers run their own operating system, or do they share a common one? It seems like a pretty straightforward question, but the more I think about it, the more complicated it gets.

So, here’s the thing—when you’re using Docker containers, you hear a lot about efficiency and lightweight setups, right? I mean, one of the big selling points of Docker is that it allows you to run apps in isolated environments without the overhead of running a full virtual machine for each one. But then I started wondering, what does that mean for the operating systems themselves?

If you’ve got, say, ten different containers running on the same Docker host, are they all spinning up their own mini-OS instances? Or are they somehow sharing a base OS, like some kind of communal setup? I get that containers are supposed to be pretty minimal and designed to run just the necessary components to keep an application alive, but isn’t there some underlying architecture that these containers rely on?
