Am I still paying for storage, the Elastic IP, or any other associated resources? AWS does not charge for stopped EC2 instances in the same way it charges for running instances. When you stop an instance, you are not billed for instance usage; however, the storage associated with the instance can still incur charges. Specifically, the Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes that are attached to the stopped instance will continue to incur storage costs. Pricing for EBS is typically based on the amount of storage provisioned, as well as any I/O operations performed, depending on the volume type used. Therefore, while you’re not paying for compute resources during the stopped state, you still need to take into account potential costs for storage.
In contrast, if you were to terminate an instance, any associated EBS volumes would generally be deleted (unless configured otherwise), thus ceasing any ongoing storage costs. This distinction is crucial for cost optimization in AWS. Additionally, AWS Chargebacks can be monitored through the AWS Billing Dashboard. You should also consider setting up CloudWatch alarms to help keep track of your resources and their associated costs effectively, ensuring you’re only billed for what you need when it’s in use.
