How can I adjust the size of the icons in the file manager on Ubuntu 22.04 running GNOME?

anonymous user

So, I’ve been having this little frustration with my file manager on Ubuntu 22.04 using GNOME, and I’m hoping you all might have some tips to help me out. I’ve been using the default file manager for a while now, and I really like it. However, I prefer my icons to be a bit bigger to make my files easier to spot, especially when I’m navigating through a ton of folders.

I’ve tried looking through the settings, but I feel like I might be missing something. I found some options related to views, but nothing that really lets me adjust the icon size directly. Does anyone know if there’s an easy way to do this? I’ve seen people mention tweaks and extensions, but I’m not exactly sure how those work or if I should even dive into that, considering I’m not super tech-savvy.

A friend suggested that maybe there’s an option within the right-click context menu, but I haven’t come across anything like that myself. Honestly, I just want to have a smoother experience without squinting at my screen or accidentally clicking on the wrong files!

Also, is there any way to save those settings? Sometimes I feel like I make changes, but they don’t stick after I restart my computer, which can be super annoying! I’ve seen tutorials online for older versions of Ubuntu or even other desktop environments, but those don’t seem to apply here.

If anyone has been in the same boat and figured it out, I’d really appreciate the help! It seems like a simple fix, but I can’t figure it out for the life of me. So, if you have gotten your file manager looking the way you like with the icons sized just right, please share how you did it! Thanks a ton!

Adjusting Icon Size in GNOME Files on Ubuntu 22.04

To adjust the icon size in the default file manager on Ubuntu 22.04, commonly known as GNOME Files (or Nautilus), you can do so by switching to the ‘Icon View’. You can access this by clicking the ‘View’ menu in the top-right corner of the window and selecting ‘Icon View’ if it isn’t already selected. Once you’ve switched to the Icon View, use the ‘View’ menu again to find the ‘Zoom In’ option which can enlarge your icons. Alternatively, you can hold down the ‘Ctrl’ key while spinning the mouse wheel up to increase the icon size. As for the right-click context menu, it typically doesn’t provide an option for adjusting icon sizes directly, but you might find useful options related to sorting and arranging your files there.

Regarding saving your settings, changes should generally persist after a restart. However, if you’re experiencing issues where your icon size resets, consider checking if any GNOME extensions or tweaks are interfering with your settings. Install the ‘GNOME Tweaks’ tool if you haven’t already; it provides additional options for customizing your GNOME experience, including appearance settings. You can install it via the terminal using the command `sudo apt install gnome-tweaks`. This tool may help you ensure that your preferences are saved consistently. Remember that keeping your system updated can also counteract any bugs or glitches that might affect settings retention.

Ubuntu 22.04 File Manager Icon Size Help

Adjusting Icon Size in Ubuntu 22.04 File Manager

It sounds like you’re running into a common issue with the default file manager in GNOME on Ubuntu 22.04. Don’t worry! There are a couple of ways you can try to get those icons looking the way you want.

      Check the View Options

First off, you can actually change the icon size from the file manager’s view options. Here’s what you can do:

      1. Open your file manager.
      2. Go to the top right corner and click on the three dots (menu icon).
      3. Look for “Zoom In” and “Zoom Out” options. You might need to zoom in a few times to get those icons bigger.

      Using GNOME Tweaks

If that doesn’t do the trick, you can try using GNOME Tweaks. It gives you even more control over the appearance. Here’s how to get it:

      1. Open a terminal (you can find it in your applications).
      2. Type sudo apt install gnome-tweaks and hit Enter. This will install it.
      3. Once that’s done, search for “Tweaks” in your apps and open it.
      4. Navigate to the “Appearance” section, where you can find some options to adjust icon sizes among other things.

      Saving Your Settings

As for saving those settings, they should stick around after a restart. But if they seem to reset, it could be due to some odd settings or conflicts with extensions you might have installed. Just make sure everything’s updated and try not to install too many extensions that modify the file manager.

      Right-Click Context Menu ?

About that right-click context menu tip, you can try right-clicking in the file manager and look for “View” or “Display” options, but usually the zoom in/out is more straightforward and usually does the job!

Hopefully, this helps you get those icons sorted! Just take it one step at a time, and you’ll have that file manager looking just right in no time!
