How can I download the Facebook application on Ubuntu?

anonymous user

I’ve been trying to figure out how to download the Facebook app on my Ubuntu system, and it’s turning into a bit of a challenge. I know that Facebook doesn’t have a dedicated app for Linux like it does for Windows or macOS, but I’m really hoping there’s a workaround that doesn’t involve using the web version all the time. I mean, I love my Ubuntu setup, but I miss the convenience of having an app that I can quickly open without firing up my browser.

I read somewhere that there are some unofficial apps available, but I have no idea which ones are actually reliable or safe to use. I came across a few options like “Facebook Desktop” and some other third-party clients, but I’m a bit wary about downloading anything that might compromise my security. Has anyone had a good experience with these? Are they stable, or do they just end up crashing all the time?

Also, if I decide to go the route of using a browser to access Facebook, is there any way to make it feel more app-like, maybe by creating a desktop shortcut or something? I heard that you can use certain browser features to create a more app-like experience, but I’m not exactly sure how to set that up. If anyone has tips or steps on how to do that, I’d love to hear them!

And for those who’ve tried using Facebook on Ubuntu, have you found any tweaks or tricks that make it a smoother experience? I’m not super tech-savvy, so if you could keep it simple, that would be awesome.

I just want to stay connected with friends and family without too much hassle, you know? Ubuntu is great for so many things, but Facebook is one of those apps that I really miss. Any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

Downloading Facebook on your Ubuntu system can be a bit challenging due to the absence of a dedicated Linux app. However, you can consider using unofficial apps like “Facebook Desktop” or “Franz” that integrate several messaging platforms, including Facebook Messenger. While these options provide a native-like experience, it is important to proceed with caution. Check user reviews and ratings to ensure their reliability and security. Keep in mind that unofficial apps may have limitations or stability issues, so a little experimentation may be necessary to find one that works well for you.

If you prefer to access Facebook through a web browser but want to create a more app-like experience, you can set up a desktop shortcut using Google Chrome or Firefox. In Chrome, you can navigate to Facebook, click on the three-dot menu in the top right corner, select “More tools,” and then “Create shortcut.” Make sure to check “Open as window” for a dedicated window view. In Firefox, you can use the “Add to Desktop” feature under the menu to create a similar shortcut. Additionally, there are browser extensions like “Webapp Manager” that allow you to turn any webpage into a pseudo-app. These methods can help you stay connected with friends and family with less hassle while maintaining the aesthetics of an app on your Ubuntu setup.

Finding a Facebook App for Ubuntu

I feel your pain! It’s definitely tricky to find a dedicated Facebook app for Ubuntu since, as you mentioned, they don’t really have one. However, there are a couple of workarounds you might find helpful.

      Unofficial Apps

There are a few unofficial clients like Facebook Desktop and Ferdi that some users have reported decent experiences with. Just a heads up, though—be careful when downloading unofficial apps. Make sure to read reviews and check the community feedback to determine if they’re reliable and safe.

Using a Browser as an App

If you’d rather not mess with unofficial apps (totally understandable!), you can make Facebook feel more like an app by creating a desktop shortcut. Here’s how:

      • Open Google Chrome (or Chromium) and go to Facebook.
      • Once you’re on the Facebook page, click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
      • Select More Tools and then Create Shortcut….
      • Check the box that says Open as window and click Create.

This will create a shortcut on your desktop that opens Facebook just like an app! Super easy and nice!

      Tips for a Smoother Experience

      Some other handy tips:

      • Try using a lightweight browser like Midori or Epiphany which may run smoother.
      • Consider using a browser extension that blocks ads and scripts to speed things up.
      • Make sure your Ubuntu is updated. Sometimes performance improves with the new updates.

Hope these ideas help you stay connected without too much hassle! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
