How can I report an issue to Ubuntu regarding the fan speed on the Raspberry Pi 5?

anonymous user

I’ve been playing around with my Raspberry Pi 5 and recently decided to install Ubuntu on it. Everything has been running smoothly, except for one bizarre issue – the fan speed! It seems like it’s running way too fast and constantly, even when I’m just doing some light tasks. I’m not really sure if this is a software issue or if it’s just how the fan operates under Ubuntu.

Checked some forums and noticed others are having the same problem. Some suggested adjusting the PWM settings or editing configuration files, but I’m kind of lost on that front. I’ve dabbled a bit with Linux, but I’m no expert when it comes to fine-tuning fan speeds on specific boards like the Pi. Plus, I worry I might break something if I tweak the wrong settings!

What’s got me stumped is how to officially report this issue to Ubuntu. Is there a dedicated way to submit bugs or problems like this? I’d really appreciate some guidance on that because I can’t be the only one dealing with this obnoxious fan noise. I feel like I’m starting a mini wind tunnel inside my workspace!

Also, if anyone knows some potential fixes or workarounds to calm that fan down in the meantime, I’d love to hear those. I found some scripts online claiming to help with fan control, but I’m hesitant to try them without knowing if they’re safe, especially since running the Pi at high speeds isn’t really ideal for longevity.

It would be great to find out if anyone else has reported similar issues or if Ubuntu has acknowledged this as a known bug. If you’ve got experience with fan control on the RPi running Ubuntu, I’d be super grateful for any advice or detailed instructions. Thanks for any help, you guys!

Sounds like you’re experiencing a common issue that some Raspberry Pi 5 users have reported after installing Ubuntu! The fans can be quite noisy, especially if they’re running at full speed all the time. It could be a problem related to how Ubuntu manages the hardware, or it might just be the default settings that need some tweaking.

First, regarding the fan speed, many users suggest adjusting the PWM settings or looking into the configuration files. If you’re feeling uncertain about editing these files, it might help to back them up first. That way, if anything goes wrong, you can easily revert to the original settings.

To report this issue to Ubuntu, you can use their Launchpad bug tracker. It’s pretty user-friendly: just create an account if you don’t have one, and then you can search for existing reports or create a new one. Make sure to include details like your Pi model, Ubuntu version, and specifics about the fan behavior. This can really help improve the software!

As for potential fixes, there are a few scripts that people have shared in forums that may help you control the fan speed better. Just be sure to check the feedback from other users before trying them out. It’s always a good idea to look for solutions that others have already found success with.

You might also consider monitoring the CPU temperature. Sometimes, the fan runs fast simply because the system thinks it’s overheating. If you’re into it, installing a temperature monitoring tool could provide insight into whether high temperatures are triggering the fan.

In the meantime, try to search through forums like the Raspberry Pi or Ubuntu forums. You could find others who have faced the same fan problem or potential solutions that have worked for them. If you’re not super confident about messing with the settings, it might be best to wait until more updates are released that could help stabilize the fan speed. Good luck!

It sounds like you’re dealing with a common challenge when using Raspberry Pi 5 with Ubuntu, particularly regarding fan control. Many users have reported issues with fan speeds running higher than expected even during light tasks. This behavior can indeed be linked to how Ubuntu manages CPU temperature and fan settings, which may differ from what you experience on other operating systems. To start troubleshooting, you can explore the configuration files typically located in /etc/, specifically fancontrol. If you’re comfortable, you could use a utility like pwmconfig to set up your fan speed according to temperature thresholds. However, as with any configuration, proceed with caution—misconfigurations can lead to unintended consequences, including overheating.

Regarding reporting the issue to Ubuntu, you can submit a bug using the Launchpad bug tracker, which is the official platform for reporting bugs in Ubuntu. To detail your fan speed issue, include information about your Raspberry Pi 5 model, the specific Ubuntu version you’re using, and any steps you’ve already taken to troubleshoot. This will help the development team identify trends and potential fixes. In the meantime, consider reaching out to community forums, such as the Ubuntu Community and Raspberry Pi forums, where users share scripts and solutions for fan control on the Pi. You’ll likely find users who have successfully mitigated fan noise or can guide you in implementing those scripts safely.
