I am experiencing issues while trying to install Plex on my Ubuntu 20.04 system. Can anyone provide guidance on how to resolve this problem?

anonymous user

I’ve been trying to set up Plex on my Ubuntu 20.04 machine, and I’m really starting to lose my patience. I thought this was going to be a straightforward process, but it seems like I hit a snag right from the start. Here’s what happened:

I followed the installation steps I found online, but no matter how many times I try, I get these error messages popping up that I can’t make sense of. I initially added the Plex repository and ran the update command, and when I finally got to the point of installing the package, things started to go sideways. One of the error messages mentioned something about dependencies not being satisfied, and then it just spiraled from there. I feel like I’ve spent hours trying to troubleshoot this, looking up different forums and guides, but nothing seems to help.

I checked to make sure my system is fully updated and that I have all the necessary packages installed. Still, I get these weird errors that seem to point to missing libraries or something. I’ve tried running the installation with `sudo`, of course, because I know that’s just how it goes on Linux, but it doesn’t seem to change anything.

I also considered whether there might be conflicts with other software I have running, but honestly, I don’t think that’s the issue since I’ve kept it pretty clean. I really want to get Plex up and running so I can finally stream my media, but I’m stuck here feeling like I hit a brick wall.

So, is there anyone out there who has installed Plex on Ubuntu 20.04 and ran into similar problems? What worked for you? Any tips or steps you could share would be super helpful. I’m open to trying anything at this point—just really need to get this resolved before I throw my laptop out the window! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

      Plex Installation Help

      Plex Installation Troubleshooting

Sounds frustrating! I totally get it. Setting up Plex on Ubuntu can be a bit tricky sometimes. Let’s see if we can figure this out together.

Here are some steps you can try:

      • Check the Repository:
Make sure you added the right Plex repository. Sometimes a typo can mess things up. You can check it with:

        cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list
      • Update your system:
Run these commands to update your package list:

        sudo apt update
        sudo apt upgrade

      • Install Dependencies:
Sometimes, missing dependencies are the issue. Try installing the following (if you haven’t already):

        sudo apt install apt-transport-https
        sudo apt install ffmpeg
      • When Installing Plex:
Run the command to install Plex media server and see if there are extra details in the error message that could give you a clue:

        sudo apt install plexmediaserver
      • Check for Conflicting Packages:
If you think there might be conflicts, you can see what’s installed with:

        dpkg -l | grep plex

This lists any Plex-related packages and can help you figure out if something is clashing.

      • Look at Logs:
Check the logs for Plex or installation errors. You can find some logs at:

        /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs/

They might give you a hint about what went wrong.

      • Try Reinstalling:
If all else fails, you could try completely removing Plex and reinstalling it:

        sudo apt remove plexmediaserver

        Then try to install again.

      Ask for Help:

If you’re still stuck, don’t hesitate to ask on forums or Reddit. Provide the specific error messages you’re seeing, and people will be more able to help!

Keep your chin up! You’ve got this. Just a bit of trial and error, and you’ll be streaming your media in no time!

It sounds like you’ve encountered some common issues that users face when trying to install Plex on Ubuntu 20.04. The first step in troubleshooting the dependency issues is to ensure that your package sources are correctly configured. Check that the Plex repository you added is up-to-date and that you have executed sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade after adding it. Sometimes, dependencies may not be satisfied due to conflicts with libraries or other installed packages. You can identify missing dependencies by running the command sudo apt install -f, which should attempt to fix broken dependencies and install any missing ones. Additionally, examine the error messages closely as they can provide specific information about which libraries or packages are problematic.

If you continue to experience issues, consider removing any previous installations of Plex before trying again. Use sudo apt remove plexmediaserver to remove it, and then clear your package cache with sudo apt clean. You might also want to check for system logs or the Plex logs found in /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs for any clues regarding what might be going wrong during the installation process. If conflicts with other software are a concern, running sudo apt-get autoremove can help clean up unused packages that may interfere with the installation. Lastly, if all else fails, consider reaching out to forums such as the Plex community for peer support, where experienced users can share their insights on resolving specific dependency issues.
