I am experiencing issues with AnyDesk on my Ubuntu system where it reports that the remote server display is not supported, particularly when using Wayland. Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution?

anonymous user

Lately, I’ve been having a pretty frustrating experience with AnyDesk on my Ubuntu setup, and I’m hoping to find some real-world advice from anyone who might have dealt with this issue before. So, here’s the deal: I’m using Wayland for my display server, which, as we know, has its perks. But for some reason, AnyDesk keeps throwing me error messages about the remote server display not being supported.

At first, I thought it might just be a glitch, so I tried restarting both my local and remote systems. I also made sure to run the latest version of AnyDesk, but nothing seemed to fix the problem. I’ve done some digging online, and it appears I’m not the only one running into this. Some forums suggest that AnyDesk doesn’t play well with Wayland, which is disappointing because I really like Wayland’s features, like better security and smoother graphics.

I’ve read that switching to X11 could resolve the issue, but I’m hesitant to go back to that after having enjoyed the benefits of Wayland for a while now. I’m kind of in a pickle here. I need remote desktop access for certain tasks, and while AnyDesk has been my go-to for a long time, this situation is really throwing a wrench in my workflow.

So, I’m reaching out to see if anyone has faced this conundrum. Have you found any workarounds or tweaks that actually help? Also, has anyone successfully used AnyDesk with Wayland without hitting this wall? If you have tips or solutions, or even just your experiences, I would really appreciate it. It’d be super helpful for those of us trying to stick with Wayland while also needing reliable remote desktop functionality. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!

It seems that the main issue you’re facing with AnyDesk on Wayland is a compatibility problem. As you’ve discovered, there are notable limitations when using AnyDesk with Wayland, primarily stemming from how Wayland handles remote access compared to X11. One workaround that some users have found helpful is to ensure that AnyDesk has the necessary permissions to hook into the Wayland session. Occasionally, adjusting the settings in the Wayland compositor can provide the required access, but this is not always a guaranteed solution. Since you prefer the features of Wayland, it’s understandable that reverting to X11 feels like a step back, but if remote access is critical, testing this might be worthwhile.

Another approach could be to explore alternative remote desktop solutions that have broader support for Wayland. Tools like Remmina or RustDesk are increasingly being adopted and offer better compatibility with Wayland environments. If you’re set on using AnyDesk, you could reach out to their support or forums to check for any updates or beta versions that address this issue. It might also help to check for any upcoming updates on the Wayland side, as the ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and more applications are beginning to support it seamlessly. Keeping an eye on community discussions and official announcements could yield fruitful results in the search for reliable remote desktop functionality in Wayland.

Sounds like you’re having a rough time with AnyDesk on Wayland! I feel you. I’ve been in a similar situation where things just don’t want to play nice together.

So, from what I’ve gathered, AnyDesk isn’t fully compatible with Wayland yet. Some people online have mentioned that it can be a bit of a pain because Wayland comes with all these cool features, but yeah, not playing nicely with remote desktop stuff is a bummer.

Switching to X11 is definitely a common suggestion, and while I know you like Wayland, it might just be the easiest fix for now, especially if you need to get things done. You could try running your session in X11 temporarily while using AnyDesk, then switch back to Wayland when you don’t need it.

Another thing you could check is if there are any settings in AnyDesk that might work around the problem, like enabling legacy support or something like that. Some users have also suggested using an alternative remote desktop tool that works better with Wayland, but I know it’s tough to switch once you have a favorite.

Honestly, the whole remote desktop situation on Linux is a bit of a mixed bag right now. It’s like, you want all the new features but also need reliable tools! If you find anything that works or if someone has a magic fix, please share. I’m sure others would love to know too!

      Good luck with it!
