I encountered a screen locking issue while upgrading my system from Ubuntu 20.04 to version 22.04. Can anyone provide assistance or solutions for this problem?

anonymous user

So, I recently decided it was time to upgrade my system from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04, and let me tell you, it didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped. Everything seemed to be working fine initially, but once the upgrade finished, I started running into this really annoying screen locking issue.

I’ll give you the rundown: after I upgraded, my screen would lock after just a couple of minutes of inactivity, which I know is a common feature. But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t come back when I move the mouse or press a key. Instead, I’m left staring at this black screen with a lovely “Locked” message. I’ve tried to follow the standard steps to get it unlocked, like pressing Ctrl + Alt + F3 to switch to a console and log in, but that hasn’t worked either.

What’s even more frustrating is that I do not have access to the power options or the terminal like I used to at 20.04. I feel a bit stuck! I thought about rebooting, but I’ve had bad experiences with just jumping into a hard shutdown, and I’d prefer to avoid that if possible.

I’ve skimmed through the forums for solutions, and it seems like others have had similar problems, especially with graphics drivers after the upgrade. I’m using an older laptop with an NVIDIA graphics card, so I’m really hoping it’s not a compatibility issue. Some people have mentioned tweaking the display settings or reinstalling the drivers, but I’m hesitant to dive into that because it sounds a lot more complicated than I’m prepared for.

Has anyone else dealt with this screen locking mess after upgrading to 22.04? I’d love to hear what worked for you or if you have any straightforward fixes or workarounds that I might have missed. Please help a fellow Ubuntu user out—my laptop is pretty much rendered useless until I can get this sorted! Thanks!

      Ubuntu Screen Lock Issue Help

Screen Lock Issue After Ubuntu Upgrade

Wow, that sounds really frustrating! Upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04 can be a bit tricky, especially with graphics drivers. It seems like your screen locking issue comes from the changes made during the upgrade.

A few things you can try:

      • Check Power Settings: Sometimes, the power settings can get reset. Try going to your system settings and look for the power options to adjust the screen timeout.
      • Graphics Drivers: Since you have an NVIDIA card, you might need to reinstall the drivers. Go to the Software & Updates app, then to the Additional Drivers tab. See if there are any proprietary drivers available for your card.
      • Disable Lock Screen: If you can navigate to the Settings, you could disable the screen lock for now until you figure out the driver issue.
      • Try a Different TTY: Sometimes, switching to a different terminal can help. You mentioned using Ctrl + Alt + F3, but you can also try F1 and check if it allows you logged in.

If all else fails, and rebooting feels risky, try a soft restart by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del to see if it brings you back to a login screen without fully shutting down.

Good luck! It can be a pain, but the community is usually helpful if you keep looking for solutions.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04 can indeed introduce various issues, particularly with screen locking and graphics drivers. The problem you’re experiencing seems to stem from an incompatibility between the NVIDIA drivers and the new version. To resolve this, first, try accessing the TTY console with Ctrl + Alt + F2 or Ctrl + Alt + F3. Once there, you can attempt to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers. This can be accomplished by executing the following commands:

      sudo apt update
      sudo apt install nvidia-driver-
      sudo reboot

Replace with the version number that is appropriate for your hardware, which you can find on the NVIDIA website or via the Ubuntu documentation. If reinstalling the drivers doesn’t resolve the issue, consider disabling automatic screen locking in the settings or using gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-user-switching true in the terminal to prevent screen lock altogether as a temporary workaround until a proper fix is found. Additionally, exploring different desktop environments like Xfce or MATE may provide a better experience without the screen lock problem. Keep your NVIDIA drivers updated, and make sure to review the Ubuntu forums for any updates on fixes specific to 22.04.
