I’m experiencing an issue during the installation process of Ubuntu where it becomes unresponsive while setting up the ext4 file system. Has anyone encountered a similar problem, and what solutions are available to resolve this?

anonymous user

I’ve run into a pretty frustrating hiccup while trying to install Ubuntu on my machine, and I’m hoping someone out there has experienced something similar and might have a solution. So, here’s the scoop: I’m in the midst of the installation process, everything seems to be going smoothly until it gets to the part where it’s setting up the ext4 file system. Suddenly everything just freezes up. At first, I thought it was just taking a long time, but after sitting there for a good 20 minutes and not seeing any progress, I had to force a restart.

This is not the first time I’ve attempted the installation; I’ve tried a couple of different USB drives and even redownloaded the ISO just to be sure I wasn’t dealing with a corrupt file. I’ve also checked the integrity of the USB using the built-in tool in the Ubuntu installer itself, and everything seemed fine. My computer specs are decent too—nothing too old, so I didn’t expect this kind of problem.

I’ve looked around online and found a few threads where people mentioned some similar issues, but the solutions varied widely. Some suggested changing the boot settings in the BIOS, while others mentioned potential problems with my hard drive. Honestly, it’s a bit overwhelming trying to sift through all the suggestions. I’d love to know if anyone else has faced this issue, and more importantly, how they managed to resolve it.

I’ve read that sometimes the installation can hang due to hardware compatibility problems or even faulty RAM. I haven’t done a memory test yet, but I plan to if I can’t get past this hurdle. Has anyone tried installing Ubuntu on a similar configuration and experienced these freezing issues during the ext4 setup? Any help or guidance would be super appreciated. I’m really eager to get Ubuntu up and running but feeling kind of stuck at this point. Thanks in advance for any tips or shared experiences!

      Ubuntu Installation Freezing Issue

It sounds like you’re facing a frustrating situation with the Ubuntu installation, and such freezes during the ext4 file system setup can be due to several factors. First, consider checking your BIOS settings. Ensure that any Fast Boot or Secure Boot options are disabled, as they can sometimes interfere with Linux installations. Additionally, switching the SATA mode to AHCI, if it’s currently set to IDE, can significantly improve compatibility for Linux systems. If your BIOS has settings related to UEFI and Legacy modes, it might be worth trying to toggle those to see if it makes a difference during installation. Also, keep an eye on the error messages during installation; they can provide good hints about whether the issue lies with disk configuration, memory, or even something related to the USB drive itself.

Since you mentioned trying different USB drives and verifying the ISO file, it might also be worthwhile to check the hard drive’s health. Use tools like `GSmartControl` or `smartctl` to run a health check on your hard disk before trying the installation again. If you suspect RAM issues, booting into a live session and running `memtest86+` can help identify faulty RAM. Lastly, consider testing the installation with minimal hardware connected—remove any peripherals not essential for the installation. If all else fails, posting your issue on Ubuntu forums with detailed logs from the installation process can attract responses from experienced users who might have faced similar challenges.

      Ubuntu Installation Issues

Ubuntu Installation Freezing on ext4 Setup

It sounds like you’re having a tough time with the installation! I’ve been there too, and it can be super frustrating.

Here are a few things you might want to try:

      • Check your BIOS Settings: Make sure that your SATA is set to AHCI instead of IDE. Sometimes, changing this can help with installation issues.
      • Try Different USB Ports: If you’re using USB 3.0, switch to a USB 2.0 port. Some installations have issues with USB 3.0 during setup.
      • Boot Options: When you start the Ubuntu installer, try pressing Esc and then edit the boot commands. You can try adding nomodeset or noacpi to see if that makes a difference.
      • Check your RAM: A faulty RAM stick can cause the installer to freeze. If you haven’t done a memory test yet, it could be worth running the Memtest86+ option available in the GRUB menu.
      • Hard Drive Issues: You may want to check if your hard drive is healthy. If you can boot into a live session, you can use tools like GSmartControl or run fsck to check your disk.
      • Try a Different Desktop Environment: If you’re downloading the standard version of Ubuntu, you might want to try lighter flavors like Xubuntu or Lubuntu, as they tend to have fewer issues with certain hardware.

Hopefully, some of these tips can help you get over this hurdle. Don’t get discouraged—lots of people run Ubuntu successfully, and it’s great once you get it going!

Good luck, and let us know what works or if you need more help!
