I’m having trouble with copy-pasting in the Command Prompt on my Windows machine. Neither right-clicking nor using keyboard shortcuts seems to work properly. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and what solutions might there be to resolve it?

anonymous user

I’m really stuck with something and could use some help from anyone who’s been in a similar situation. I’m trying to copy and paste in the Command Prompt on my Windows machine, and it’s driving me a little crazy. I’ve always relied on right-clicking or using keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, but for some reason, nothing is working. It just seems like the Command Prompt has taken a stand against me.

I’ve checked a few settings and even tried running it as an administrator, but I still can’t get it to cooperate. I’ve definitely got some text I want to copy from a file and paste into the Command Prompt, but every time I try, it’s like the keyboard shortcuts just refuse to work. I’m sure it’s probably something simple that I’m overlooking, but it’s really frustrating.

To make things even better—or worse—I’ve looked online and there doesn’t seem to be a one-size-fits-all solution. I found some old threads where people mentioned toggling the “Quick Edit Mode” option, which sounded promising. I tried it, but nothing changed. I even booted up in safe mode to see if it was a software conflict, and nope, still no luck. It’s like I’m in some weird universe where the Command Prompt just doesn’t want to engage with me.

Has anyone else experienced this? I mean, I can’t be the only one having this problem, right? If you’ve dealt with a similar issue before, how did you fix it? I could use any tips or tricks you’ve picked up along the way. Is there a secret shortcut I’m missing? Or maybe there’s a setting buried somewhere that I just haven’t found yet?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. I’m really hoping to resolve this soon because my productivity has taken a nosedive.

It sounds like you’re having quite a frustrating experience with the Command Prompt on your Windows machine. You’ve already tried the common methods like using keyboard shortcuts and right-clicking for copy and paste, which should generally work. However, in your case, it seems like the issue might be related to the “Quick Edit Mode”. To toggle this, right-click on the title bar of the Command Prompt window, select “Properties”, and check the “Quick Edit Mode” option. Once enabled, you can select text with your mouse and use a simple right-click to paste it back into the Command Prompt. This is a common workaround for times when standard keyboard shortcuts aren’t functioning as expected.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, another potential solution is to check the registry settings that control how the Command Prompt handles input. Sometimes, corrupted settings can interfere with its functionality. You can also try launching a different terminal emulator, such as Windows Terminal or PowerShell, which may provide you with an improved copy-paste experience. Additionally, it’s worth verifying that your keyboard shortcuts aren’t being overridden by other applications or settings within your system. If none of these solutions work, consider checking for pending Windows updates or reinstalling Command Prompt as a last resort. Hopefully, one of these tips allows you to regain your productivity without any further hiccups.

Struggling with Copy & Paste in Command Prompt?

It sounds super frustrating! Here are a few things you might want to try if you haven’t already:

      • Quick Edit Mode: You mentioned trying this, but make sure it’s enabled correctly. Right-click on the title bar of the Command Prompt window, select Properties, and check the box for Quick Edit Mode. This lets you select text with your mouse and copy it easily.
      • Right-Clicking for Paste: After you enable Quick Edit Mode, to paste, just right-click in the Command Prompt window. It should paste whatever is in your clipboard without needing any keyboard shortcuts.
      • Keyboard Shortcuts: If you’re using Windows 10 or later, you should be able to use Ctrl + Shift + V to paste (some older versions require right-clicking). The standard Ctrl + V doesn’t work in all versions, so it’s worth a try!
      • Using the System Menu: You can also try using the system menu: click on the command window icon in the top left corner, and go to Edit > Paste. It’s a little clunky, but it should work.

If none of this works, there could be some weird setting or conflict happening, but it’s also possible that another program is interfering. You mentioned safe mode, which rules out most things. Are you using any clipboard management tools? Sometimes those can mess with the standard copy-paste functions.

Also, double-check if your keyboard is functioning properly outside of the Command Prompt. If you can copy-paste in other applications, it rules out any hardware issues. If all else fails, switching to another terminal emulator like Windows Terminal or PowerShell might be worth trying.

Good luck! Hopefully, you can get back to being productive soon!
