Is there a way to receive a notification or alert prior to my Mac’s screen locking automatically?

anonymous user

I’ve gotta ask—does anyone know how to get a notification or alert before my Mac’s screen locks automatically? It’s one of those little quirks that’s been bugging me for a while now. You know how it is—you’re in the zone, working on something important, and then bam! The screen goes black because it reached the time limit I set for it to lock. It’s so frustrating, especially when you’re typing a long email or finishing up a document and then have to log back in and try to remember what I was just doing.

I tried changing the settings in the System Preferences, but even with longer time intervals, I still find myself getting locked out at the most inconvenient moments, which feels like a big productivity killer. I wish I could get some kind of alert—a pop-up or a sound—just a minute or two before it locks, you know? That way, I could finish up what I’m doing instead of getting interrupted mid-flow.

Honestly, I’m kind of surprised that there isn’t an option built-in to do this already. Like, why wouldn’t Apple think of it? I’ve looked around and found some apps that claim they can help, but I’m not sure if they work well or if they’ll just overcomplicate things. Plus, I really don’t want to download a bunch of random software just to solve this one little problem.

What do you all do when you’re in the middle of something important? Do you have any tips or tricks to avoid the screen locking you out? I’d love to hear your solutions. And if you’ve found any apps that work well for this or even a hidden setting I might have missed, please share! Wouldn’t it be amazing to just get a little nudge before having to log back in? A simple solution would make all the difference. Thanks in advance for any help!

To receive a notification or alert before your Mac’s screen locks automatically, you can consider creating a simple script that runs in the background and checks the time remaining until the screen lock activates. This can be accomplished using Automator or AppleScript, where you can set a timer to alert you before the lock kicks in. For instance, assuming you’ve set your lock time to 10 minutes, you could create an alert for 9 minutes and 30 seconds, giving you a heads-up with a notification or sound. The script can be designed to execute every second or few seconds, depending on your preference, ensuring that it captures the moment when the lock timer is about to expire.

While Apple’s built-in options may not cater specifically to this need, utilizing third-party applications like “Amphetamine” can provide more flexibility with your screen sleep settings. Amphetamine allows you to prevent sleep or lock while specific applications are running or under certain conditions, which could be especially helpful during critical tasks. Additionally, you can check for any existing Mac extensions or services that might already fulfill this need without needing to download excessive software. Lastly, consider adjusting your workflow to include breaks where you manually prevent the screen from locking, allowing you to maintain productivity without the constant worry of the screen going dark unexpectedly.

That sounds super frustrating! I totally get where you’re coming from. Losing your work right when you’re focused is the worst. I haven’t found a built-in way in macOS to alert you before the lock happens, but I can share a few ideas that might help you out.

First off, you could look into using Automator, which is a built-in tool on your Mac. You might be able to set up a script that gives an alert a minute or so before your screen locks. The automation feature might take a bit to figure out, but there are some guides online!

If you’re open to trying third-party apps, I’ve heard about a couple that might help. Amphetamine is one that lets you keep your Mac awake based on specific triggers, and it’s really simple to use. Another one is Caffeine, which is old but does a good job of keeping your Mac awake for set periods, and you can easily toggle it on/off.

Also, you might want to adjust your sleep settings a bit in System Preferences > Energy Saver. Setting the displays to sleep after a longer period can help too, but I know that’s not as ideal. It’s kind of a trade-off.

In the end, I totally get the vibe of wanting a little nudge before the lock happens! If you master that Automator thing or find a decent app, let us know! It could help a lot of us out. Good luck!
